Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

What are conventions of a film opening?

Using conventions in a film opening is essential. This is because the purpose of it, is to begin the audiences interest so they immediately stay focussed and engaged in watching the remaining of the film. Conventions of a film opening include many things, such as; introducing the main characters, so the audience are aware of what characters they should be following throughout the whole film, introducing the plot which will give the audience an idea of what kind of genre the film is and what it is about, establishing the setting, which will help the audience know the exact location in which the film is set, credits and titles, a key event occurs and non diegetic sound is used.

What are the conventions of a title sequence?

A title sequence is a method used in the opening of a film to present all the titles and the credits. This usually comes in a specific order. The production icon usually comes first, then the distribution icon comes second, the first actor then comes in, followed by the second actor, after this the title of the film is shown, this is then followed by the remaining of all the actors, after all the main characters are shown the casting is next, then the music superviser, then the costume designer, then the film editor, then the production designer, then the director of photography, then the executive producer, then the screenplay then the producer and then finally the director is shown last.

Recording over the film to show how we have used film conventions in our opening

Throughout the beginning of our thriller opening we followed all the conventions of a film opening. This is because we introduced the main characters, the plot, main setting, a key event occurred, we used titles and credits and non diegetic sound. We also followed the order of the title sequence.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Media representations are the ways in which the media portrays particular groups. There are seven main main categories , there are; class and status, age, ethnicity, ability and disability, sexuality, regional identity and gender. In our film opening, many media representations of these social groups were portrayed. The two social groups in which we represented were age and ethnicity. Age was represented in the opening of our film as the location was in a college which therefore links it to students of young age. Ethnicity is represented as society mainly sees and stereotypes the Asian community to be more academically able and successful which portrays the Asian chemistry student. Bullying and committing suicide is seen as a negative thing therefore these social groups are represented in a negative aspect.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Thriller films in general are targeted at mainly older teenagers in the age range of 18. This may because they include violent and upsetting scenes. It may also be disturbing or scary for younger teenagers to watch.  However the age range varies due to the different types of thrillers. There are psychological thrillers which may be aimed for older teenagers or even adults, romantic thrillers which are aimed at adults and supernatural thrillers which are mainly targeted for older teenagers. The audience more specific to our sub-genre would be teenagers from the age of 14 up to 19. This is because it is based around bullying and being a student and as it is also set in a college.

Here is a Facebook profile of a member of our target audience. As mentioned, thrillers are mainly aimed at teenagers, this is shown on this persons Facebook account, in their bio that they are interested in thriller films as stated 'Love my thriller films'. This already shows the interest and engagement this person will have upon our thriller film.

This member of our target audience has written a status stating how much she would like to see our thriller film and also how 'awesome' it looks. This helps to keep a larger audience as she is clearly has friends her age on Facebook, and therefore advertising it to all her friends, that they should watch the film also. This is how social networking sites such as Facebook help to get a larger audience for new films.

You can see the excitement this member of the target audience has to watch the thriller film, again proving that thriller films are indeed aimed at teenagers.

Here she has written a status about watching the film and that it is a 'must watch' film. Writing 'must watch' helps the audience grow as this is again advertising and sharing the film amongst other members of the target audience.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the process of producing and constructing our final thriller film opening, we used a number of different technologies. The variety of technologies we used included Macs which helped us to access safari and firefox which then helped us to access blogspot, other technologies include Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, JVC camera, mobile phones, flip cameras, still cameras, video drives, memory cards, camtasia and MPEG stream clip. Using these different technologies helped us to make our film opening as successful as it could be and without them it would of been very difficult. It also helped me as a individual to become more independent.

Using the Macs helped us to access nearly all the necessities we needed in order to create our film opening. This included technologies such as safari and firefox. Safari and firefox helped us to access google, youtube and blogspot. These three technologies made it easier for the researching and planning of our film. This is  because google helped us to find images and information we needed in order to help us with the planning of our film, youtube helped as we were able to watch clips of real film openings which gave us an insight on how to create ours and finally blogspot was a extremely vital part as it was through blogging that we could put all our research and planning together in order to create ideas for our final thriller film opening. Blogging helped me become more independent as I was able to blog whenever and whatever I though was necessary to contribute to the making of our film opening.

One of the most important technologies we used which without, would not have been possible to create our film was the JVC cameras. The JVC cameras helped us to capture all the footage we needed in order for our film to be of best quality. It also allowed good shot compitsion and let us film a variety of shots such as close ups, mid shot, establishing shot, high and low angles and many other shots. It was difficult at first to get the camera to capture all the footage as we were not used to this new device however over time we began to get more and more used to it and very much enjoyed using them. Additioanlly the camera allowed us to take footage of every movement and all the footage we filmed were of high quality. Because of the high quality footage, it helped to make our film look professional. Before using the JVC cameras we had a health and safely tutorial on how exactly to use them and all the basic 'do's' and 'dont's' of using them. Using the JVC camera helped me to become more independent as I was mainly the one fiming the final product.

Another technology we used to constuct our film were the flip cameras. The flip cameras were a small, simple and easy piece of technology used as it was just swicting it on and getting on with recording whatever needed to be recorded straight away. Getting the footage from the flip cameras to the Mac computers was very simple as the flip cameras had a USB connected to it in which we had to plug into the computers. From there we had to covert the footage to MP4 using MPEG streamclip. The flip cameras were usually used to get feedback from our audience and teachers and also used for interviews. Using them really helped me to again become independent. It helped me to develop my planning skills as the feedback I got back would have a affect on me and I would take on board all the feedback I  receieved.

Still cameras was another technology used which helped us immensely throughout the process of our preliminary exercise. This is because it helped us to creare our storyboard as we took a number of pictures to create a storyline. The still cameras were also used to take pictures of the props and locations we used in our prelim. Using the still cameras helped me to become more creative as I took a number of pictures. All these images were then put on our blogs which therefore helped to develop our research and planning skills as it was helping to build up a story for our prelim.

Having the three memory cards, A, B and C helped keep everything stored as everything we filmed and took pictures of were always stored on the memory cards. This is due to the large storage capacity it has. This was one of the most important technologies because without it all of our work not have been safetly saved and stored anywhere. It was easy to put all the footage and pictures from the memory cards on to the Mac computers as all that needed to be done was inserted the memory card into the side on the computer. We were shown a tutorial from candimedia on how to insert the memory card into the camera. This was a significant part in filming as the footage we had filmed would not have been saved
or may not have got recorded without them.

The video drive was the most essential thing we needed in order to keep all our footage in place. This is due to the large storage capacity it has. Everything we had filmed was always stored in the video drive and this was useful as some of the clips from the footage were edited on Final Cut Pro and was put on to Soundtrack Pro. This was done by plugging the video drive into the Mac computers. It was often difficult remembering to safetly remove the video drive, by dragging it into the trash. This would of been a major problem as all our hard work would of been lost. A advantage of storing all the footage on the video drive was that it is portable therefore it was able to be moved around from computer to computer.

SoundTrack pro was another very important technology we used to create our film. This is because this is where the main sound was creared to put into our film. We found that choosing and creating a suitable sound for our film was very fun. This helped me as an individual, become more creative as it was me creating my own sound to put into the film. When we were happy with the end product of our sound we imported in on to Final Cut Pro. I was happy and very confident that the sound in which we created went well with our film plot.

Final Cut Pro was another technology we needed to create our film and without this it would of been very difficult to constuct our film. This is because Final Cut Pro created the whole film by putting all the scenes together in order for it to flow well and look as professional as it could be. This was done by trimming and deleting the clips that didn't go well together or clips that did. This was done by arranging all the footage on the timeline and editing them from there. In addition Final Cut Pro allowed us to add in effects such as flashes and transisitions, this may engage the audience. Final Cut Pro also allowed us to add in titles, credits and the sound and music we had created on Sound Track Pro. This helped me become more creative as it was about putting everything together in order for it to all flow well and also get the sound on the precise timing as the film.

Finally Motion. This is where we created our Distribution Icon for the very beginning of our film opening. We chose to name our Distribution company 'EyeWatch Films'.
We used Bokeh effects and transitions to create a professional look and also because we thought it would engage the audience further. This helped me develop my creativity skills as this was all created by myself and Fareena.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation Question 2

How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?

Media representations are the ways in which the media portrays particular groups. The seven main representation themes are; class and status, age, ethnicity, ability and disability, sexuality, regional identity and gender. In our film opening, many media representations of these social groups were portrayed. The two social groups in which we represented were age and ethnicity. Age was represented in the opening of our film as the location was in a college which therefore links it to students of young age and targetting the teenage audience. Ethnicity is represented as society mainly sees and stereotypes the Asian community to be more academically able and successful. This portrays the Asian chemistry student, which links to the theme of ability. This also links in with gender as the chemistry student is a girl, and boys are more likely to be succesful in Science rather than girls. This therefore shows our theme of gender in a positive light. However, the Bullying and suicide is very negative therefore age and ethnicity are represented in a negative aspect.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience of your media product?

This is a member of our target audience. Her 'cover photo' on Facebook is supporting our thriller, Reaction. Her age (21st August 1995) also gives an insight to what our target audience will be - teenagers. She also attended a school in London which shows the wider audience for thriller films are from any age living ordinary lives.

This status shows her excitement towards an upcoming film. This is normal for teenagers, as they are not paying any taxes or bills, their money is usually spent on leisure time going to the cinema. Therefore, aiming your film at teenagers will give a larger audience. They also tend to go in groups "Going with all my friends", the more friends they tell through these social sites (Facebook in this case) the more people will become aware and interested. Especially if she is showing excitement.

Our thriller is specifically aimed at those in education, such as college. As it is filmed in a local college, those attending the college and that are aware of the college will spread the word about it.

Our film, "Reaction" is a sci-fi thriller or "chiller" and the target audience for this sub genre will be those interested in Science. As it is based in college, it relates to Science students or even more specifically, Chemistry students.

Sharing links through social networking will get other members of the target audience interested, because the person's friends on Facebook will most likely be of the same age.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the production of our product, we used a variety of technologies to put it together, which helped us make it successful. We used Macs which helped us access the internet and softwares such as Final cut pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion the JVC camera, mobile phones, flip cameras, still cameras, video drives and memory cards to create our film.

In the process of putting our film together, we used the Mac computers in which we used many technologies such as Safari for browsing. This helped us with our research and planning through Youtube and Google images because other thriller openings such as Kidulthood inspired us.
Through Safari, we also had access to Blogger which helped us with the research and planning for our final product. It helped me feel more independent because I was allowed to blog freely and publish whatever I felt was relevant to putting towards our planning through creativity, such as using Prezi to put our ideas together.

Of course, without Safari it would not be possible for me to be putting information across on to Blogger. However the Macs also allowed us access to Final cut pro, which without it we would not have been able to put our fim together. Final cut permitted us to view our footage, put it together, edit it and delete it in the timeline. For example, on Final cut we noticed that some scenes did not link together so we had to swap them around in order for them to flow. This software also helped us to add in effects such as flashes, music and add on titles. Without Final cut, our film would have looked as if it was thrown together and would have appeared very messy and unprofessional. Being able to use Final cut has made me more creative and have a professional insight to how producers create their films. At the start, it was quite difficult to use but the more we imported files and edited on the timeline, the more I got more confident with using it and began to enjoy using the software. Being comfortable with using Final cut was very vital because it had an important role of putting our footage together.

As well as using Final cut, we used Sound track pro to import sounds on to Final cut. This helped us to choose, create and combine sounds that were most suitable for our product. It was enjoyable having a taste of the variety of sounds they had on the software. We put our sound together on there and linked two bits of music together. Using Sound track, we could increase or decrease the speed and the volume of our music. We then imported it on to Final cut so that it can build up the opening of our film. Although, like Final cut, this was quite difficult to use at first. However later on, Naziara and I got the hang of it and had fun listening to all the creative sounds. It allowed me to experience what a professional media producer does to put on their sound and realised that the production of a film is more complex than I had imagined. Overall, using Sound track pro was a great opportunity.

I believe that the most creative part of the process of creating our media film was using the software called Motion. Motion is where we created the icon of our distribution company "Eye Watch Films". This is because we started from scratch from putting together a name, and then how we would present it so that it looks engaging. On Motion, you can create a little sequence of how you want your icon to play. We added in Bokeh effects and chose a font for our distribution company and the transition that will be used for it to appear. This was interesting because we were free to create it however we want and be as creative as possible. Naziara and I tried to make it as professional and engaging as possible and I think we were quite successful with it. I thoroughly enjoyed using Motion because it improved my creativity skills and gave us an understanding of how icons such as "Warner Brothers" are created.

Camtasia was a software we used to put on a voice or annotations to our film. It records you whilst your film is playing so that you can watch it and discuss it at the same time. Like Final cut, it allows you to edit, combine and put footage together. It also allows you to annotate your footage such as adding in symbols such as arrows and then describing the scene. I used Camtasia to record a 'director's cut voice', commenting on my film and the forms and conventions we used in our thriller opening. Camtasia is very useful for creating footage like documentaries, where one can do voice overs and add in graphics. It helped me to look over my media product and see what went well and what didn't.

In order to put our videos on to Blogger, we converted the files to MP4. We did this by using a software called MPEG Streamclip. We dragged our videos on to the little software and it converted with great success. This made it easier whilst uploading our videos and it was good quality.

Indeed, using Macs helped us to create, edit and put our ideas together however without the JVC cameras, filming our footage would not have been possible. The JVC cameras helped us to capture professional and high quality footage. At the start of the process of creating our product, we were shown a health and safety tutorial of how to use the cameras. As a young adult of this day and age, I am so used to using the cameras on my mobile phone. Therefore, getting to experience what it feels like to use a professional camera was a great opportunity and gave a professional feel. I was not comfortable at the start, but going further into our filming, I became more confident with using the cameras and gained good composition by using media techniques such as close ups, wide shots, the 180 degree rule and the rule of thirds. Experimenting was fun with the JVC cameras and looking back at our footage involving mistakes was quite humorous to watch and reflect upon.

In order to save what we had captured, we inserted memory cards into our cameras as taught how to in the tutorial. We had 3 memory cards, A, B and C. After capturing the footage, we inserted the memory cards into the Macs to copy into the video drives and to open on to Final cut. The memory cards were a useful technology and backed up any bits of footage in case something happened to our video drives.
Everything is saved on our video drives. Without our video drives, all our work would be all over the place. The video drives contain a big amount of storage space to save all our work on and works as a file to keep organised. We connect our video drives to our Mac computers and use the footage to open up Final Cut.

With the modern technology of today, we are able access almost everything through our mobile devices. Although I did not use my mobile phone, as I own an Apple Product, the iPod Touch, I was able to download the Blogger app and upload photos and post blogs. This was easier for me rather than taking pictures with the still cameras and connecting it to the computers. I found the Blogger app very useful and helped me to access my blog posts quickly and through a portable device.

As we had our iPod's/mobile phones to take still images, we did not really use the still cameras through the process of producing our final product. However we did use them for our preliminary exercise. We used the still cameras to take pictures of our props and then upload them to our blogs, using the media cards. Still cameras were useful to capture photos with high quality. I found them very easy and comfortable to use.

The simplest technology I found to use were the flip cameras, because we simply turned it on and pressed record. When we was done, we just inserted the USB into the computers, and then converted to an MP4 file using MPEG streamclip. We used these flip cameras to get feedback and interviews from our teacher and target audience members. I found them a very handy device and good to capture videos in every day life and in great quality too!

To conclude, using a variety of technologies gave me an insight on the work professional media producers do and helped me to experience what it is like to create media footage and different media techniques. The media technologies used for our products linked with each other, for example, without the video drives we would not be able to open up on Final cut, and without safari we would not be able able to use Blogger. The softwares and devices used helped me to improve my creativity skills and  I gained confidence, which without them would not have been possible.
